Funchal has a number of excellent beaches although you'll have to travel to Machico and Calheta if you're looking for white sandy beaches as the main beaches are mostly pebbled or the ultra fine black volcanic sands. The Volcanism Centre and the Caves at Sao Vincente are an excellent day out and you'll be entertained and educated during the guided tour of the origins of the island of Madeira.
